Tacking upwindphoto © 2007 Tom Purves | more info (via: Wylio)

Thanks to Twitter, I’ve been learning about the implications for using photos in a school setting. Specifically, students often want to use the first pictures they come across, but as an educator, I know those images may have a range of copyright issues. The solution, apart from using pictures they’ve taken themselves, is to use Creative Commons pictures… these are images that the author has already and explicitly put in the public domain, but where attribution is still given. I’ve shown an example here, where the source of the image is clearly given.

We can see when the picture was taken, the photographer’s name, and there is a link to more information.

The web site, Wylio, accesses images on Flickr, which are labled “Creative Commons”.

Easy peasy!
